Enabling All Young People To Make Music

Our aim is that no young person in Surrey should be prevented from learning a musical instrument because their parents can’t afford it. We achieve this by providing bursaries for instrument lessons and grants for music ensembles.

Funding Lessons for All: We help fund music lessons for financially disadvantaged children and young people at all levels of musical development.

Funding Developing Musicians: We fund bursaries for talented young musicians through Awards for Young Musicians and Future Talent.

Funding Music Ensembles: We recognise how being a part of a music ensemble can greatly increase the enjoyment and commitment to persevere with a musical instrument..

New Ensemble Project at Christs College

We are delighted to announce that we will be funding individual bursaries and a new brass ensemble project at Christs College on the Bellfields estate in Guildford this term. This is part of a joined-up strategy by the new head of music to revitalise music at the school which has very high pupil premium ratios.  We are hoping to expand the project and discussing with potential partner funders how we might do this. Again watch this space!

New Music Ambassador: Sophie Kauer

Sophie Kauer has agreed to become our newest and youngest music ambassador. An ex-Guildford High School pupil, Sophie came to international attention when she was selected from hundreds of cellists worldwide for a leading role in the film TÁR, starring Cate Blanchett.  Her debut album Unsung was recently released by Deutsche Grammophon when she became the youngest artist ever to reach no 1 on the Classical On-Demand Audio Streaming Chart. She is a Classic FM ‘Rising Star,’ and was chosen by the Times as the Classical Breakthrough nominee for the 2023 South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

How we help with bursaries and inspirational performances…

  • Ivan

Ivan is the latest of the promising young musicians we are funding through Future Talent's Fledgling programme.

  • Noah & Rhys

This year's AYM award has been given to Rhys aged 14 playing the guitar and to Noah aged 16 who plays the French horn. We are very much looking forward to hearing how they have got on at the end of the award year.

  • Stepan

The trust has been supporting Stepan since September 2018. You can read his story in our blog - click here.

Why support us?

Music tuition from a young age improves young people’s literacy,  problem-solving skills, confidence, resilience and creativity. Many schools are struggling to resist the pressure to sacrifice music for other priorities. Children with families earning £48,000 or more are twice as likely to learn an instrument as those whose parents earn £28,000 or less.

CKT is a registered charity staffed by volunteers with no overheads. Therefore 100% of your donation goes to help or inspire local young people to make music. At present we are only able to help a limited number of young musicians. With your help we could help and inspire many more young people across Surrey to experience the joy of making music .
